‘Melanin’ Won 1st Prize for the Race Equality Competition held at Nelson and Colne College
“I wrote ‘Melanin’ for the Race Equality Competition held and Nelson and Colne College in 2020. I was seventeen and in college at the time and the racial tensions that were rife in America were also felt globally by people from all over the world due to social media.
This poem was written around the time of the Black Lives Matter movement and was written by me [Aun Haider] during it. As an ethnic minority myself I was able to write about this issue from the perspective of a person of colour.
‘Melanin’ is a powerful piece that reminds everyone just how valuable diversity is.”
